A student had been detained after a handgun was recovered Monday afternoon from duffle bag on a bus transporting Twin Rivers School District fifth and sixth graders to a basketball game
Twin Rivers Superintendent Rob Brown released a statement Monday evening, saying that as of 8 p.m., the student in question was awaiting transportation to the Stoddard County Juvenile Detention Center.
The bus was en route to Naylor High School when a student reported the presence of a handgun on board, Brown said.
"The coaching staff immediately gained possession of the duffle bag and moved the student to the front of the bus," Brown stated.
The staff then contacted building principals and the superintendent to confirm the presence of the handgun, leading to a call to the Ripley County Sheriff's Department for assistance.
Upon arrival at Naylor High School, one coach escorted the other students into the gym while another coach and the bus driver stayed with the student and the duffle bag. The Ripley County deputy and a juvenile officer confiscated the handgun and took statements from those involved.
Brown said the district is taking all necessary steps to address the situation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
"While this remains an ongoing and active investigation, it appears to be an isolated incident with no other students involved," he said.
The district maintains a zero-tolerance policy for weapons on school property, and any violations will be met with severe consequences in accordance with school policy and state law, Brown said.
Brown also commended the coaching staff and bus driver for their effective handling of the situation.
"I want to personally commend our members of the coaching staff and bus driver for their swift, decisive action, communication, and calm demeanor," he said.
