The staff at Dexter Head Start was handing out meals and homework to students on Wednesday after a major water leak forced the facility to close for the week.

When the staff arrived Monday morning it was discovered that a water leak had occurred over the weekend. The decision was made to close the building so repairs could be made and the building cleaned. Haynes stated the facility was being cleaned professionally to ensure it is safe for the students return.

Haynes stated that they felt they still needed to provide service to the students and their parents. The decision was made to provide each student with eight meals, four lunches and four breakfasts. They included such things as fruit cups, various vegetables, hot pockets, stir fry packs and other food items. In addition to the meals the staff provided homework sheets to the parents to keep the students engaged.

Due to the COVID-19 regulations still in effect at the facility the staff handed the the meals and homework papers to parents through the car windows as they pulled up to the facility. Haynes said they are still restricting access to the building due to COVID-19 so the parents are familiar with these procedures.

Haynes went on to say this closure was no different then the closure of the facility during the pandemic. At that time the staff also provided meals and homework papers to keep students engaged.

The facility is scheduled to reopen to students on Monday.
