The Bernie Board of Aldermen held its regular monthly meeting Jan. 7 in the Bernie Municipal Courtroom.
The first order of business was to address the concerns of a Bernie citizen. Alicia Baugh informed the board that she believed her meters were not being read correctly and they were being estimated instead. Mayor James Tilmon assured her that he would look into the situation and make sure the meters would be read correctly. The previous meeting’s minutes were then read and approved.
Alderman Bruce Appleton then informed the board that a maintenance department employee had finished his probation and was doing a good job. He went on to request a pay raise for the employee. After a motion was put on the floor the raise was approved unanimously by the board.
Alderman Barry Zimmerman then stated a Bernie officer was due a pay raise as of Nov. 20, 2018. A motion was placed on the floor and approved unanimously to give the officer the raise plus back pay.
In other business Gina Hamby was nominated to the Bernie Library Board to fill the vacancy left by Kelly Burch. Her appointment was approved by a unanimous vote of the board.
The board amended city ordinance number 1161 to state that the salary cap for city employees will be $16 an hour. Mayor Tilmon read the proposed amendment and then read it a second time after a unanimous vote by the board. Following the second reading the amendment was passed unanimously.
The board then moved on to the executive session. It adjourned after the completion of the executive session. The next meeting will be Feb. 4 in the Bernie Municipal Courtroom.
