Puxico girls basketball coach Jordan Lindsay believes defense and conditioning will be key for her eight-player squad entering the 2015-16 season.
"Our success really depends if we are disciplined on defense," Lindsay said. "We will also have to be well-conditioned because of our depth. I hope we develop well as the season progresses. We are still fairly young, which is exciting going forward."
The Puxico girls basketball roster is composed of freshmen Sophia Hancock and Jordan Calzoni; sophomores Kaytlynn Haynes, Faither Oliver, Kylie Moore and Kambryn Collard; junior Katelyn Pierre; and senior Danielle Roberts.
Lindsay said starting point guard Roberts averaged 20 points per game her sophomore season before missing her junior season to injury, center Pierre averaged 12.5 points per game last season and Hancock averaged 16 points per game last season as an eighth grader.
Lindsay said Oliver also saw significant playing time last season and should provide solid contributions as a utility player this season.
"I have three returning starters," Lindsay said of her roster. "We also have an eighth grader moving up that should be able to contribute this season."
Lindsay said she felt like her team exhibited great potential when it competed at the Rib City Shootout over the summer.
"Overall, we played really well as a team this summer," she said. "I think we are really starting to come together. We are a small team, but we have impact players."
Puxico opens its season Dec. 3 at home against East Carter County.
The Indians will play a varsity-only schedule this season with most regular-season contests beginning at 6 p.m.
Following its home-opener, Puxico will compete in the eight-team Chaffee Invitational with Delta, East Prairie, Kelly, Oran, Chaffee Scott City and Woodland Dec. 7-12.
"We should be OK," Lindsay said of the tournament. "It always depends where you get placed at the seed meeting, but last season we finished third in the tournament."
Puxico will compete in Class 2, District 1 with Alton, East Carter County, Greenville, Neelyville, Thayer and Van Buren at the end of the season at Van Buren.
