The early youth firearms deer hunting season is this weekend, Oct 20 through Nov. 1.

For hunters to participate, they must be at least 6 years of age and no older than 15 years of age on the opening day of the early youth season. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Only one deer of either sex may be taken during the early youth portion. If you have more than one permit, you must use them in another portion.

All youth hunters must be in the immediate presence of a properly-licensed hunter education-certified adult (this includes landowners on their own land) or someone who was born before Jan. 1, 1967. They also must be able to hold and fire their weapon by themselves.

It is also important to remember all hunters and mentors must wear a hunter orange cap and visible vest, shirt or jacket at all times while hunting during the youth firearms deer portion.

Hunters are reminded to always check local regulations before hunting.
