PUXICO, Mo. -- Though it has been approximately two years since the last warrant was issued for his arrest, Brian Guffey was arrested by Puxico City Police earlier this week.
Guffey, 36, of Puxico, had warrants out for six counts of failure to appear on various charges. Among the charges are passing a bad check, non-support, DWI, driving while suspended or revoked, and animal cruelty.
The animal cruelty charge stems from an incident that took place on April 30, 2013.
According to the report, Guffey allegedly shot a dog that belonged to his niece. The report states that Guffey's niece, Erin Clark, heard three gun shots coming from outside, followed by her dogs whimpering. Clark alleges that she noticed Guffey with a camouflage shotgun, and her eight-month-old mix breed dog was dead in her driveway.
When Clark asked Guffey why he shot the dog, he allegedly said the dog had "jumped his mom's dog." Guffey then allegedly tied a rope around the dead dog's neck, hooked the rope to a four-wheeler, and drove away while dragging the dog's body down the road.
Clark reported to law enforcement that she located one of her other dogs the following day, and it had a gunshot wound to its back.
The other offenses for which Guffey had warrants range from 2011-2013.
"I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'm not the one who arrests people," Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russ Oliver said. "I believe Mr. Guffey works out of town, and that could be why he avoided arrest for so long."
Guffey is being held at the Stoddard County Jail. Bond was set at $16,500 cash and/or surety for all charges. He remains in jail at this time.
