Daily Statesman General Manager and Managing Editor Noreen Hyslop was recently awarded four 2015 Media Awards from the Missouri State Teachers Association.

The awards were presented at MSTA's Regional Meeting held at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

MSTA annually names recipients across Missouri for their Education Media Awards in the areas of Newspapers, Radio, Television, Audio/Visual, Online Content and Website. One award is given in each category for daily papers and one in each category for weekly papers. The association's statewide Communication Awards Committee met in mid-April in Columbia, Mo. to judge nominations from around the state.

"Nominations are recognized on originality, impact, objectivity, timeliness, appeal and contribution to education," said MSTA Public Relations Director Todd Fuller from the Columbia office.

Seven categories are included in the division of Daily Newspapers,

including Editorials/Columns, Features, General Coverage, Literacy Programs, Online Content, Photography, and Best Series. Hyslop earned three of the seven awards, along with an Honorable Mention award in the Feature category.

In addition to the Honorable Mention award for her article, "Taking Things for Granted at Richland Schools," Hyslop won the award in the Features category for "The Joy of Giving a Child a Voice," an article that told the story of a Southwest Elementary autistic students whose world was changed last year when the Dexter Schools Foundation funded a "speaking" device to aid her both in the classroom and at home.

Hyslop earned the Photography category award for a photograph entitled, "New Chief in Town," taken at a Keller Public Library's Story Hour

In the category of Literacy Programs, the award went to the Statesman editor for coverage of a special program at Central Elementary. The article, "Central Students Explore History," spotlighted the classroom of Nicole Guethle as students came alive in a museum setting, each depicting a character in history.

"Having spent a 27-year career in the Dexter Public School system, these awards are especially meaningful to me," said Hyslop following the presentations. "I very much appreciate being able to tell some of the unique stories in Stoddard County related to the field of education and literacy. To be recognized for doing something I thoroughly enjoy is sincerely appreciated."

MSTA is Missouri's leading education association, with more than 44,000 members. It has been serving Missouri educators for 159 years.
