Rachel Phillips of Dexter, a working mom and local realtor, had an idea back in 2010 to help families in need at Christmas time. She founded what was initially called a Free Christmas Re-gifting project, but was later renamed, "Manger Full of Toys."
Phillips works on the theory that it is better to give than to receive, and given she has done just that. Her efforts have culminated with hundreds of local children -- from birth to 18 -- finding a variety of toys under their tree Christmas morning that otherwise would not have appeared.
This year on Saturday, Dec. 20, the fifth annual Manger Full of Toys project will once again be held in Dexter, and it promises to be a bigger and better success than ever.
"We've been collecting new and slightly used toys that remain in excellent condition all year," Phillips explains, "and we're still taking donations, consisting of both items and monetary. This year through the generosity of the local Chamber of Commerce, we've been able to utilize warehouse space to store the toys, which has been wonderful."
The toy and gift giveaway concept is a simple one. Any adults in need of toys for little ones are asked to come to the west end of the Chamber of Commerce building on Market St. in Dexter (across from the Dexter Police Dept.) at 9 a.m. on Dec. 20. There are no income guidelines and no forms to complete.
"We do set limits as to how many items each family may have," Phillips explains, "depending upon how many children are in the family.
"We'll start at 9 a.m. and continue until everyone is served," she says.
The method has worked well for Phillips over the years. She attests that there has never been an issue with parents taking more than they need.
A woman of extraordinary faith, Phillips says that from the project's beginning, prayer and God's grace has played a vital role in the program's success.
"This project is very much a 'God thing,'" she says. "He has provided for the families in our area year after year, and he continues to do so this year."
