BERNIE, Mo. -- The Bernie Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of a new fax/copy machine at their regular meeting recently for use by the police department and municipal court. The aldermen opted to buy the machine from Shelton's Business Machines of Malden, Mo., at a cost of $1,417.

Mayor David Teeters presented the issue to the aldermen, along with the cost provided by Shelton's Business Machines. He said the old copier was no longer functioning and the new machine was needed.

In other action, the aldermen hired Greg Martin as a full-time employee in the maintenance department. He replaces Steve Hurley. Martin had worked as a part-time employee in maintenance. City Superintendent Charlie Dean recommended that Martin be moved to full-time, and the aldermen approved the recommendation.

Teeters appointed Willard Adams to the Bernie Housing Authority (BHA) Board. The board is independent of the city and acts as an advisory board for low-income housing in the city.

The aldermen unanimously approved an ordinance setting the municipal election for April 7, 2015. Approval is required by state law. There will be three positions on the ballot in April, one from each of the three wards in the city. Currently, Todd Young serves in the Ward I position, Tim Gage in the Ward II position and Ivan Mekan in the Ward III position.

The annual Bernie officials and employees' Christmas party will be Friday night, Dec. 12, in the Community Center. Three Tempting Tarts Catering will be the caterer. The company is owned by Linda Summers from Bernie, Diane Walker and Shelley Ranberger of Holcomb.
