Editor's Note: This story will also be available in the next print edition of Dexter Daily Statesman Tuesday morning., MALDEN, Mo. - The Dexter Bearcats came up short in its bid to become the first football team to beat the Malden Green Wave in the 2014 season.
Malden recorded 28 points in each of the first two quarters as it built a 56-0 lead by halftime on its way to a 76-8 victory against Dexter.
"It was a disappointing game," Dexter coach Justin Peden said. "I really thought we would come out and play them a lot closer than that. They got on us quick. We made some mistakes in all aspects of the game and they capitalized. When you do that with teams that are good they are going to put it away quick and that's exactly what they did."
The Green Wave, which are ranked No. 8 in the latest Class 2 state poll, rushed for seven touchdowns and threw from threw more touchdowns as it finished regular-season play a perfect 9-0.
"To be quite frank, it feels good," Malden coach Joel Wyatt said of the performance. "We feel like we still don't get any respect, any credit. That's fine and dandy. It just feels good to come out against a team that has won a few games and is a Class 3 school and it was just great to really have a dominate performance like we did tonight."
Malden moved the ball 341 yards on the ground.
Chapen Riley was 6 of 7 in the air for 119 yards and threw three touchdowns.
"They've got serious speed," Peden said. "Their receivers that are off the line block extremely well. They did a really good job of setting the edge all night. Their receivers were driving our guys back. We hadn't seen anything like that all year. They are a bunch of really good, athletic kids who play hard. They played hard the whole time and you've got to take your hat off to Malden in that situation. Those guys played very very hard, wanted this game and they are a really good football team."
Fans of both teams got a glimpse of the future in the second half as both coaching staff's provided their underclassmen with ample playing time.
Dexter sophomore Jason Jarrell showcased his potential at the quarterback position late in the fourth quarter when he rushed the ball 12 yards for a touchdown with 4:04 left. Jarrell paced the Dexter rushing attack with four carries for a net total of 34 yards.
"At the end of the day we got some younger guys some experience," Peden said of the second half. "I think the guys tried hard and were still fighting even though it was out of reach . . ."
"Some younger guys got valuable experience," Peden added. "Jason Jarrell did a good job at quarterback. Gabe Jackson and Alex Beilers on the offensive line are two freshmen that got some reps. They got a chance to get a little bit of a taste of Friday night. I'd rather [the score] had been the other way around, but it was good experience for them."
Malden's Cortez Dobbins had three carries for 43 yards. He scored a touchdown on all three of his rushes.
Dremond Robinson had eight carries for a team-high 155 yards. He ran for two of Malden's seven rushing scores.
Ethan Stevens had a team-high seven tackles for Dexter.
Dobbins paced the Green Wave with seven tackles. Javiel Cooper added six more.
Malden has secured the No. 1 seed in Class 2, District 1. Malden hosts No. 8 seeded Charleston (0-9) Friday in a district quarterfinal.
Dexter (4-5) is currently in sixth place in the Class 3, District 1, standings. Here are the current district standings for Class 3, District 1 at 1 a.m. Saturday, based on the points system used to determine seedings: 1. Park Hills (9-0) 53.93, 2. Potosi (7-2) 44.03, 3. Ste. Genevieve (6-3) 37.22, 4. St. Pius of Festus (6-3) 35.32, 5. Kennett (4-5) 32.07, 6. Dexter (4-5) 30.8, 7. Fredericktown (3-6) 28.85, 8. New Madrid County Central (4-5) 27.99.
However, according to the 2014 football playoff instructions packet provided by the Missouri High School Activities Association: "There will be an automatic seeding adjustment if two teams who are consecutive in the seedings have played head-to-head competition."
As a result, since Dexter beat Kennett 35-34 in a head-to-head meeting Dexter would move up to the No. 5 seed and visit No. 4 seeded Festus Friday if the standings remain the same after all Week 9 games are completed.
According to the playoff instructions packet: "There are 13 games being played on Saturday, Oct. 18 and brackets cannot be official until all games are completed. The last game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon."
Look for official confirmation on the seedings when it becomes available.
"We need to regroup after a game like this and make sure we have our focus going into the playoffs," Peden said Friday night. "If we see Ste. Genevieve or St. Pius, which is probably who we are going to be looking at, either one of those games is a winnable game. We played Ste. Genevieve tough and I've seen film on St. Pius. Both are good teams, but both are games we can win and set up a rematch with Park Hills that I'm sure our guys would like to have. We've just got to make sure after a night like tonight we don't stop wanting to play football and want to keep going. I think these guys are resilient, are good young men and will want to keep going and erase this from people's memories."
