DEXTER, Mo. - The Dexter varsity girls tennis team played Kennett until after sunset but came up short in its quest to secure a team win in a match that lasted over three hours Monday.

Undefeated Kennett (11-0) won five of six singles matches and all three doubles matches on its way to an 8-1 victory.

Kennett also won the junior varsity contest against Dexter 7-2.

"I didn't think we were as intense as we should have been on a Monday," Kennett coach Janet Hilburn said. "We've got a busy week. We took care of business, but we've got a lot of things we need to work on before the district starts next week."

The closest varsity match was the No. 1 singles match between Dexter's MaKayla Waldner and Kennett's Hadley Hilburn that Waldner won 8-6.

"I knew it was going to be long," Dexter coach Kurt Lovelady said of the classic. "MaKayla jumped out to a 7-2 lead and Hadley was able to come back on her. They had some really good rallies. I definitely think they could potentially see each other next week in the district.

Hilburn added: "I thought Hadley Hilburn had a good match. Waldner is a great player and always plays Hadley well. Hadley fought hard to try to overcome the deficit. She didn't pull it out in the end, but I thought she did play a good match."

Dexter hosts Notre Dame Tuesday, Sikeston Wednesday and Jackson Thursday

Kennett is slated to host Caruthersville Wednesday and visit Sikeston Thursday.

"We've got to stay focussed on getting better and working on the shots we need to improve upon," Hilburn said.

"The Class 1, District 1, tennis tournament begins Sept. 29. Kennett beat Dexter in the district championship last season for its eighth straight district title.

"We are still working on placing our shots," Lovelady said of the approaching playoffs. "We've got a lot of work to do. We need to work on a our footwork. We've changed some of our strategy on doubles to try to get two out of three doubles matches. We just need to continue hitting balls so we will be ready for long rallies."

BLOOMFIELD vs. BELL CITY BASEBALL

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. - The Bloomfield varsity baseball team improved to 12-5 Monday when it beat Bell City 4-1.

Jacob Hector threw a no-hitter for the Wildcats.

"Bell City has a pretty good squad," Bloomfield coach Tyler Trover said. "They've had some quality wins this fall. Hector struggled to find it early and we were really worried if he was going to be able to finish the game because of his pitch count. But throwing a no-hitter is a once and a lifetime opportunity and we wanted to give him that chance. Fortunately, he was able to retire all three hitters he faced in the seventh inning. We are really proud of him for his effort today."

Hector walked No. 2 hitter Austin Hicks and No. 3 hitter Nate Finney in the top of the first inning. Hicks later scored from second base on an infield error.

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first inning tied things up at 1-1.

The Wildcats added an unearned run in the fourth inning to set the final score.
