For the second time in as many months, a high-speed pursuit started on South Highway 25 and ended in Dexter on Friday night.
According to the report, Wendall J. Coleman, 50, of Jonesboro, Ark., was driving a silver 2014 Chevrolet Camaro and had been initially pursued by the Senath Police Department on the charge of speeding.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper J. K. Brooks reported attempting to stop Coleman south of Bernie. According to the report, Coleman was driving 130 mph through the city of Bernie -- which has a posted speed limit of 35 mph.
According to the report, Brooks activated his emergency equipment and Coleman still refused to stop. During the pursuit, numerous agencies got involved. The Senath Police Department, Kennett Police Department, Dunklin County Sheriff's Department, Stoddard County Sheriff's Department, and Dexter Police Department all were involved in attempting to apprehend Coleman.
The pursuit ended shortly after a tire deflation device disabled one of Coleman's tires on Highway 25 just south of Business Highway 60 in Dexter.
According to the report, Coleman continued traveling north until he lost control of the vehicle, traveled through a median and crashed into a "wrong way" sign. Deputy James Powers observed the crash and saw Coleman exit the vehicle and run west from the scene. Coleman was then apprehended and taken into custody. A urine sample was obtained from Coleman after he was advised of the implied consent law. Results of that test are not yet available.
According to the report, Coleman admitted driving the vehicle after he had been mirandized.
The vehicle Coleman had been driving was reported as being a rental car that had been rented in Jonesboro, Ark. It is unknown if Coleman had taken the optional insurance on the vehicle.
Coleman was charged with driving while intoxicated -- drug intoxication, felony resisting arrest by fleeing, careless and imprudent driving, exceeding the posted speed limit (26 mph or more), failure to drive on the right half of the road, and no seat belt.
Bond was set at $20,000 and he remains in jail at this time.
