DEXTER, Mo. - The Dexter Bearcats varsity girls volleyball team extended its winning streak to three games Tuesday night with a 25-10, 25-15 victory against the Cape Central Tigers.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 9-1 lead in set 1. The lead quickly swelled to 18-4 after freshman Kristen Garrison recorded six aces in seven serves. The Bearcats maintained a double-digit lead the remainder of the first set.
Dexter fell behind 10-6 after back-to-back aces by Cape Central junior Sarah Boerboom in the second set. The Bearcats quickly rallied after timeout to tie things up at 12-12 and later went on a 9-0 run to pad its lead to 22-13.
"I thought my girls played well the first game," Dexter coach Carmen Morgan said. "I thought we came out and didn't play well the second game. We didn't do what we should have done. There was not much focus. We pretty much made the mistakes ourselves. They served a couple balls that hit our corners and we did not adjust."
Senior middle hitter Jessica Lindsey tallied seven of Dexter's 15 kills. Senior setter Shyann Jines added five more kills. Freshman right side hitter Garrison had four kills and junior setter Julia Hahn calculated one kill.
"There were times we hit," Morgan said. "The second game all we did was tip for a while and that got old. We scrambled a little bit that second game. It's early and we are still trying to get it all together."
Garrison had six of her team-high eight aces in the first set.
"She served well and hit some good balls tonight," Morgan said of Garrison. "She had a good game all the way around."
Brittany Brown, Lexie Barnes, Hahn and Jines each had three digs. (Editor's note: corrected from earlier version that read each player had three kills).
Dexter beat Cape Central 25-8, 25-9 in the junior varsity contest.
Dexter will compete in the eight-team Notre Dame Volleyballfest with St. Pius X, St. Vincent, Notre Dame, Jackson, Cape Central, Perryville and Ste. Genevieve Friday and Saturday.
"We better put it together going up there," Morgan said. "There aren't hardly any teams in that tournament you can let go on a run. We better come ready to play because everybody else will be ready."
