Marlon "Hoop" Hoopingarner, son of the late Fred Hoopingarner and Zena Lucas Hoopingarner, was born on March 15, 1922, in Dexter and died on August 7, 2014, at Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter at the age of 92.
Mr. Hoopingarner was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Dexter until ill health made it impossible. He had worked at the MFA Grain Elevator in Dexter for 37 years and was a resident of Dexter. Marlon spent 3 years in the United States Navy as a gunner's mate 3rd class serving in World War II.
He was united in marriage to Doris Melton on February 6, 1947, in Dexter, and they enjoyed 67 years together. Mrs. Hoopingarner survives of the home.
He is also survived, by two daughters, Marla Corlew of Malden and Rita Wilcoxon and husband Don of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Helen Backfisch of Dexter; one granddaughter, Shannon Nelson and husband Dan of Cape Girardeau; one great-granddaughter, Erin Nelson and by three great-grandsons, Samuel Nelson, Nathan Nelson and Benjamin Nelson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Jackson and by four brothers, Marion Hoopingarner, Melvin Hoopingarner and two in infancy.
Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, August 9, 2014, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel on Sunday, August 10, 2014, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kenneth Biggs officiating. Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery.
