Mildred Louise (Hopkins) Hood, a long-time resident of San Antonio, Texas died May 3, 2014. She was born in Bloomfield, Mo., Feb. 15, 1929, the daughter of Lewis Boyd Hopkins and Lora Scism Hopkins.

She was raised near Bloomfield and after graduating from Bloomfield High School, she worked in a local law firm. She married her husband, Dewell E. Hood, of Bloomfield, in Bangor, Maine in 1949 and raised their three children around the world, in locations including: Seward, Neb.; outside of St. Louis, Mo.; Bury St. Edmunds in the county of Suffolk, England; Sedalia, Mo.; Kadena, Okinawa Island (Japan); and San Antonio, Texas, where they lived for more than 50 years. While there, she was an active member of St. Mark's Methodist Church, serving on the needlepoint design team for the sanctuary kneelers, and in other volunteer roles. An avid gardener, she was a long-time member of the San Antonio Garden Center, serving on the board of directors and donating hundreds of hours raising funds to support public education about gardening, horticulture, floral design, and the Garden for the Blind at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. She was also involved in the San Antonio Youth Literacy reading mentors program, and was a long-time volunteer at the Kelly and Lackland Officers' Spouses Club Thrift Shops for more than 20 years.

Throughout her life and wherever she lived, she formed strong friendships and was universally loved. Her lasting legacy to her immediate family and friends was the gift of her studied Culinary Arts and unconditional love. Her vivid personality and indomitable spirit touched the hearts of so many of us, and her passing leaves an immense hole in our lives.

She is survived by two sons, Lewis D. Hood, his wife, Geraldine Aguillard Hood and her son Jonathan Aguillard and his son Austin Aguillard of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Virginia L. Baca of Tucson, Ariz., and Jane C.H. Jacob and her husband Rodney Jacob of Oak Park, Ill.; two granddaughters, Katie Davis Kleespies, her husband, Bart Kleespies, and their daughters Savana Kleespies, of Kerrville, Texas, and Ashlee Jacob-Modahl and her husband Martin Modahl of Chicago, Ill. She is also survived by a larger "family" of friends and relatives across the globe.

Her husband of 59 years, Dewell E. Hood, predeceded her in death in 2008.

Memorial and graveside services are planned for late May in Bloomfield, Mo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to: San Antonio Garden Center, 3310 N New Braunfels Ave, San Antonio, TX 78209 or San Antonio Youth Literacy (SAYL), 1616 E. Commerce, Building 2, San Antonio, Texas 78205.
