Dexter Schools held a special board meeting on Friday, April 4, for the purpose of securing two staff members in new positions and to approve the posting of two positions that are open in the district for the 2014-15 school year.

Felicia Powers, who currently provides introductory computer instruction at Southwest part time and serves as co-curriculum director on a part time basis, will be assistant principal at Southwest Elementary. She will continue serving part time in the curriculum position for students in grade kindergarten through fifth grade.

Alana Dowdy, who currently serves in the upper grade capacity in the same part time capacity as Powers as co-curriculum director, along with duties as Key Skills instructor part time at the high school, will maintain her curriculum position and will also serve as assistant principal at Central Elementary during the morning hours.

The naming of Powers and Dowdy marks the first time the district will see assistant principals in place at the elementary level. Assistant Superintendent Corey Mouser explains, "Standards for MSIP 5, the Missouri School Improvement Program, by which Missouri Schools will be evaluated beginning with the 2014-15 school year, guidelines suggest that 1.5 administrators be in place in schools with populations the size of Central and Southwest Elementary."

While the MSIP 5 Resource Standards are not requirements, they are guidelines, Mouser said, and those guidelines influenced the decision to go ahead and employ part time assistant principals for the coming year.

The board also approved the advertising for a certified resource teacher with training and experience in the area of autism for a position at Central Elementary for the coming school year.

The posting of another position at high school was also approved. The district is in need of a Key Skills Improvement Program (KSIP) teacher for the next school year due to the reassignments of current personnel at the high school level. The KSIP instructor works with students at risk.
