Seven firefighters responded to a rural grass fire around 3:30 Thursday afternoon. The fire was in a densely wooded area about five miles northeast of Dexter off County Road 517. A home located on the property was vacant, and the home was not threatened. Fire Chief Don Seymore stated at the scene that evidence pointed to the fire having started near the driveway of the home in a grassy area a couple of hundred feet from the road. There were no power lines overhead and no obvious cause for the blaze. Strong winds Thursday quickly carried the fire into the woods, but crews encircled the area and worked with water and hand tools, containing the fire within minutes of their arrival. Firefighters remained on the scene until 4:22 p.m. There was no damage to the home and no other structures were in danger from the fire.
