The community of Dexter lost a familiar face on Thursday. Loyce Reed was an employee at the Dexter City Library, later named Keller Public Library, for 44 years, 26 of which were spent as the library's director. Reed's career in that post began when the library was situated on Vine Street near the downtown area, the building that currently serves as the municipal building.
Reed directed activities at the Keller Library from 1979 until her retirement in 2004.
Current Library Director Pam Trammell, who succeeded Reed in the directorship of the library, attributes Loyce Reed with not only guiding the library to its current location, but also with the transition to modern technology.
"It was under her directorship that the the library moved into the digital age, automating our circulation program and our collection process," Trammell noted, adding, "Mrs. Reed was so outgoing and always had a positive outlook. Her contributions will always be a part of the library and our community will miss her."
Reed was also an active member of the local community, having served in the Altrusa Club and other community and church organizations. She was also a 44-year member of the local hospital's Auxiliary.
