BERNIE, Mo. - The top-seeded Bernie Mules dominated the final three quarters of play Monday night after a slow start against eighth-seeded Campbell.
Bernie outscored Campbell by at least 16 points in each of the last three quarters after winning the first quarter 13-12 on its way to a 78-28 win.
"We started out really slow both offensively and defensively," Bernie coach Brad Botsch said. "However, the kids picked it up [after the first quarter]. I thought we really did a solid job guarding and rebounding and that is what we have to do to win games. Our formula is simple. We have to win the fight on every possession on both ends of the floor. If we can continue to do those things, we'll be able to compete with most everyone we play."
Nine of Bernie's 28 field goals were 3-pointers. B.J. Jennings and Jake Wagner both hit three treys for the Mules. Jennings finished with a team-high 23 points and Wagner scored nine points.
Caleb Ellenburg tallied 18 points for Bernie and Justin Stanfield contributed 13 more. Stanfield hit two treys.
Bernie shot 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
Fifth-seeded Holcomb beat fourth-seeded Risco 76-69 in the other quarterfinal Monday. Weather permitting Bernie will play Holcomb Thursday at 6 p.m. in a championship quarterfinal.
