What do coffee beans and purple hull peas have in common? Generally very little, but this week they are the stakes in a wager between Malden, Missouri Mayor Ray Santie and Malden, Massachusetts Mayor Gary Christenson.
On Tuesday, Christenson made a call to Santie to place a friendly bet on this year's World Series. If his beloved Red Sox bring home the trophy, Santie will send local rice and purple hull peas to the Massachusetts mayor. However, if Santie's treasured Cardinals win, Christenson will provide coffee beans from New England Coffee, a Malden, Massachusetts company.
In a press release sent from Christenson's office, he claimed that he was looking forward to sampling some native Missouri fare.
According to several media sources, officials from the Boston area have a strong tradition of making wagers with officials from opposing team's fan base.
We can only hope that in the near future, Malden City Hall, in Malden, Missouri will be filled with the aroma of coffee.
