George "Leon" Cherry, 86, of Cape Girardeau, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born July 1, 1926, in Mason Hall, Tenn., son of R.C. Cherry and Mary Collins Cherry. He and Lola Barnett were married Oct. 3, 1948, in Piggott, Ark.

Mr. Cherry served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked as a mechanic and later in the construction field.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3838 and Elks Lodge #639, both in Cape Girardeau, and loved family get-togethers, fishing, and tinkering in his shop.

Loving survivors include his wife, Lola, of 64 years; two daughters, Barbara (Phil) Bungard of Chillicothe, Ill., Elizabeth Wilhelm of Cape Girardeau; one son, David (Melissa) Cherry of Scott City, Mo.; five grandsons, Brian (Tiffany) Bungard, Jeff (Denise) Bungard, Dayne (Emily) Cherry, Dylan Cherry, and Troy Phegley; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Brad) DeVoss; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronnie (Joyce) Cherry of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Juanita McArthur of Sikeston, Mo., and Carmen (Frank) White of Chicago, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Myrtle Ruth Hardin, Elizabeth Zachary, Bonnie Hesselrode, and Allene Hopkins.

Visitation will be Monday, June 24, 2013, from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at 10 a.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating.

Interment will follow in Fairmont Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

The family requests that memorials may take the form of contributions to the V.F.W. Post #3838, the Elks Lodge #639 or the American Heart Association.

McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of all arrangements.
