Jump Rope For Heart is a national fundraising program that promotes physical activity, heart healthy living, and community service to children. The program is targeted at students in elementary schools, but anyone can hold a program at their school, child care center, community center.
First and second grade students at Southwest Elementary in Dexter annually participate in the fundraiser, which benefits the American Heart Association, raising money to fund lifesaving research and to provide educational programs.
The fundraising event is aimed at teaching students to set and achieve goals and discover that they can make a difference.
Southwest made a significant difference this year. Under the direction of Coach Josh Dowdy, who is in his first year at the local elementary school, the Southwest team raised $6,002. The money was recently contributed to the American Heart Association, marking the highest amount in five years raised by children at Southwest.
Barb Reyering, Youth Marketing Director for the American Heart Association's Midwest Affiliate, commended the efforts of Dowdy and the local students.
"This is an amazing effort," she said at the conclusion of the local program. "I sincerely thank Coach Dowdy and all of the students for this wonderful contribution."
Top fundraisers for the 2013 school year were Grant Ayers and Cy Scott.
