Lady 'Cats fall in battle of state-ranked teams
CHARLESTON, MO. -- Dexter watched its first half lead quickly evaporate in the third quarter and the Lady Bearcats never recovered in a 55-50 loss to St. Joseph Academy at the Coaches vs. Cancer Shoot-Out Saturday in Charleston.
In the battle of two state-ranked teams, St. Joseph Academy got 21 points from Erin Nelson and 14 from 6'3 Sydney Stipanovich as the Class 5 Angels, ranked No. 2, improved to 16-3 on the season with the win over the Lady Bearcats, ranked No. 8 in Class 4 heading into the game.
Dexter built a 31-25 lead heading into half-time but the Angles came out and quickly closed the gap and took a lead they would never relinquish. The Lady 'Cats cut the deficit to three points on several occasions in the fourth quarter, but they could never wrestle the lead away from the Angels.
Brittany Harris returned to the lineup for Dexter after setting out nearly two weeks with a injury, and the senior delivered a 12 point effort. Junior Erika Cobb was Dexter's leading scorer with 13 points while the Angels' defense held the rest of the Dexter team (6 other players scored) to a combined 25 points.
Dexter shot 42 percent from the field, including a 7-of-23 (30 percent) effort from behind the 3-point line.
The loss was just the second of the season for Dexter, which now stands a 16-2 overall.
Dexter will be back in action tonight as they take to the road for a game against a young but talented Saxony Lutheran squad.

New Madrid County Central 75, Meadow Heights 48
New Madrid County Central senior Benesha Childress has had plenty of highlights in her Lady Eagle career, but none more historic than what she accomplished Saturday night.
With NMCC playing Meadow Heights in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Shootout, Childress posted a game-high 23 points to unseat Tawanda Daniel as the school's all-time scoring leader and guide her team to a 75-48 win.
"I tried to hide it from her, but she had found out," NMCC head coach David Crockett said of the record. "It was kind of a surprise to an extent, but I'm excited for her.
"It's great for our program and I look forward to bigger and better things for her."
Childress was expected to hit the mark this past Thursday at home against Sikeston only to see an illness keep her out of action.
Coming into the Saturday's contest, Childress remained 14 points shy of the previous record, 1,676 points, set by Former Lady Eagle great Tawanda Daniel. She needed less than a half to hit the mark, etching her name in NMCC history in the process.
After hitting a couple buckets on her way to five points in first quarter, Childress came alive for 11 points in the second frame. A couple of 3-pointers propelled her total early in the frame and with 2:18 left in the half, she tied the all-time scoring mark on a free throw.
Childress' record setting moment came nearly a minute later, with 1:19 remaining in the half and her team leading 29-26. Rebounding a missed 3-point attempt from a teammate, she put up a mid-range jumper from the right side of the floor that banked in for her 15th and 16th points of the night.
"I knew it was somewhere around the corner," Childress said of the record. "That's great. I like that. I'm ready for 2,000."
By the end of the night, Childress pushed her career mark to 1,685 points while leading the Lady Eagles to their 12th win of the season.
"She knew about the record before the game, but it didn't change her," Crockett said of Childress. "She played hard, distributed the ball and scored when she needed to. "we came out of here with a big 'W'."
Twin Rivers 77, Charleston 43
Despite a 23-point effort from sophomore Sierra Frazier, the Charleston Lady Bluejays couldn't keep up with Twin Rivers as the two teams closed out the Coaches Vs. Cancer Shootout.
The Lady Royals got 25 points from Sydni Hester and outscored Charleston in all four quarters to roll to a 77-43 victory.
"We didn't come out with the effort tonight," Charleston head coach Josh Thompson said. "Maybe it was the girls being here all day, but we still have to come out with more intensity than that."
Twin Rivers only had a four-point lead going into the second quarter, but connected on 11 of 12 shots from the foul line in the frame to take a 31-23 advantage into halftime.
Hester scored 10 points in the third to guide the Lady Royals to their biggest frame of the night where they outscored the Lady Bluejays 27-14. Already holding a 21-point edge going into the final frame, Twin Rivers continued to pull away until activating the turbo-clock in the closing minutes.
Hester's 25 points were a game-high while teammate Tori Cole was close behind with 23. Hannah Sadler was the third Lady Royal in double digits with 11.
Frazier's 23 points were easily a best for Charleston as E'Neikqua Ewing's was the only other Lady Bluejay close to double-digits with nine points.
"I told them we didn't have the effort tonight, but that's over with," Thompson said. "How we respond Monday night against Kelly will determine the type of team we are.
"I have faith in my kids. I think they'll come out ready to play. They don't like losing."
Scott County Central 65, Sikeston 40
Rebounding from a rough first quarter the Scott County Central Bravettes defeated the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs 65-40.
Sikeston outscored Scott Central 19-12 in the first frame thanks to 10 points from Hayli Chapman, but soon found themselves in an offensive slump.
The Bravettes went on a 35-12 run through the next two frames to take a 47-31 lead into the fourth. In the final frame, Sikeston was outscored 18-9 as Scott Central closed out the win.
With four girls posting double-digit scoring totals on the night, the Bravettes were led by Ann Dennis' 18 points. Johniqua Fort added 15 to Scott Central's cause while Mikaela Blissett and Derien Ditto scored 13 and 12 points respectively.
For Sikeston, Chapman hit three 3-pointers on her way to a team-high 17 points. Erica Peet was the only other Lady Bulldogs in double-figures, scoring 10 points.
Woodland 50,
East Prairie 35
Led by a 21-point effort from Josie Long, the Woodland Lady Cardinals overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to beat the East Prairie Lady Eagles 50-35.
After fighting to an 11-11 tie in the first quarter, East Prairie put their best frame together in the second, outscoring the Lady Cardinals 13-6 to go up 24-17.
Woodland responded with 17 points in the third frame and by the fourth quarter, the Lady Cardinals had taken a 34-32 advantage.
The Lady Cardinals dominated the final frame, 16-3, to seal the win.
Dakota Arnold and Kaitlyn Shands had nine points each to lead the Lady Eagles. Behind Long's 21 points, Kat Cooper had 17 points for Woodland.

Greenville 57, Portageville 34
Taking a 22-point lead by the half, the Greenville Lady Bears rolled to a 57-34 win over the Portageville Lady Bulldogs.
Greenville outscored Portageville 14-4 in the first frame before building a 32-10 lead at the break. The Lady Bulldogs were only outscored by a point in the final two quarters, but couldn't make up for a rough first half.
Kenzy Smith had a game-high 17 points to lead Greenville with Sarah Hillis adding 13 points to the Lady Bears' cause. For Portageville, Jennifer Ifland and Taylor McCoy scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
Carbondale, Ill., 57, Poplar Bluff 52
The Carbondale Terriers defeated the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules 57-52 thanks to a game-high 26 points from McKena Miller.
Carbondale had a 26-21 lead entering halftime before Miller scored 18 points in the second half to help the Terriers maintain their lead. Poplar closed to within a point entering the final frame, but were outscored 16-12 in the fourth as Carbondale held on for the win.
Leading the Lady Mules was Danielle Farmer with 17 points while Soley Webb added 15 points to her teams' cause.
