A nine-year-old child from Dexter was airlifted to a Cape Girardeau hospital late Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle in a gravel driveway.
According to Dexter Police, Austin Oakes was on his knees playing in the gravel when a Dexter woman, 52-year-old Patricia Ann McKinney, was backing into the drive in a 2001 Dodge and hit the boy.
Austin Oakes was first transported by Stoddard County EMS to the Dexter Municipal Airport where he was met by an Air Evac unit and airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape. He was later transfered to Children's Hospital in St. Louis where he has reportedly undergone surgery for a leg injury. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The boy is a fourth grader at Central Elementary School.
