JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- State Representative Billy Pat Wright (R-Dexter) announced Monday his intention to retire, effective at the end of his term this year. Wright is term-limited.
"I will continue to serve with pride as your state representative until the end of December 2012," Wright stated.
Wright was first elected to the legislature in 2004. He was considered by many as "an elder statesman and the dean of the Southeast Missouri delegation."
He served as chairman of the Emerging Issues in Animal Agriculture Committee for the past four years, as well as serving on the Veterans, Appropriations and Utility Committees. Wright was "widely recognized as a statewide leader on agriculture issues at a time when Missouri's top industry is facing revolutionary changes," the release stated. He was re-elected three times: in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
In addition to concluding his service in the Missouri House, Wright has also chosen to forego a candidacy for the Missouri Senate, a position he filed for earlier this year. He is endorsing fellow Republican Doug Libla (R-Poplar Bluff) to succeed Sen. Rob Mayer (R-Dexter) who cannot run again due to term limits.
"I am grateful for the support and encouragement I have had during the senate campaign," said Wright.
Prior to his service in the General Assembly, Wright had a successful career in the telecommunications industry. He was also a rancher and continues to operate a cattle ranch. He and his wife, Linda, have three children and nine grandchildren.
Wright says he plans to remain active in the community, church, local politics and real estate with Trammell and Son Realty in Dexter.
