Dexter High School will have a new assistant principal and athletic director with the start of the 2012-13 school year.
Derek Urhahn, a native of Oran who has lived in Dexter for the past 19 years, will fill the post vacated by Chuck Powers.
Urhahn is a 1982 graduate of Oran High School and earned his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1987.
He graduated with a Masters of Arts in School Administra-tion from SEMO in 1998 with academic distinction and went on to obtain his Specialist in Educational Admini-stration from SEMO in 2006 with honors.
Urhahn is currently serving as superintendent in the Leopold R-III School District, a post he has held since 2005.
He has several years' experience in the Zalma, Scott City, Oak Ridge and Advance School Districts as both an instructor and as coach of basketball, track and baseball.
During the past 12 years in an administrative post at Leopold, the district has consistently received the Distinction in Performance Award.
Urhahn and his wife, Kelly, have two children in the local school system. Myles is a sophomore at DHS, and Macy is a seventh grader at T.S. Hill Middle School.
