Dexter High School took time to recognizes its spring sports athletes at its 2012 Spring Sports Awards Banquet Thursday in the high school cafeteria.
Family and friends, along with coaches and school administrators filled the cafeteria as athletes in golf, baseball, tennis, softball and track were singled out for their accomplishments during the spring sports season, which is still underway for some but drawing to a conclusion along with the school year.
Here is a breakdown of the individual awards by each sport.
Girls: The award for the most points scored during the season went to senior Taylor Martin, who excelled in the sprint races. Martin has lost just one race this season while competing in the 100 and 200 events. She is also part of the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and recently won the 400 meter event at the SEMO Central's annual conference meet.
Boys: Senior Zach Comstock was the high point producer for the boys. He recently won all conference honors in the triple jump
The baseball Bearcats have compiled a 14-6 record to date with three regular season games and the district tournament still ahead. Dexter coach Brian Becker noted the team is putting together a solid season and pointed out that five of the team's six losses have been by a combined six runs.
Junior Chase Young was awarded the batting title (.426) while the players voted senior first baseman and pitcher Alex Cliff the team's Most Valuable Player.
First-year softball coach Leonard Morse led the Lady Bearcats to a 12-win season and a second place finish at the SCAA's annual tournament. The 12-8 record is the best by the Lady 'Cats since the 2008 season
Sophomore Kendra Stevenson won the award for best batting average with a .450 percentage. Players voted pitcher Becky Anderson as the Most Valuable Player while Ashley Brown was voted as the recipient of the Dedication Award.
Senior Tyler Miller, who played in the No 1 singles spot and was part of the No. 1 doubles team along with Samuel Ward, was the team's Most Valuable Player. The award for most singles and most doubles wins is very tight and the results were not known since the team had one remaining regular-season match today against Poplar Bluff.
Senior Cody Stevens was the golf team's winner of the Medalist Award for the 2012 season. Three members of the Bearcats' golf team are currently competing at Sectionals.
