CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Dexter's girls placed first in the sprint division and earned third place finishes in the field and distance divisions Saturday at the Notre Dame Relays in Cape Girardeau.

"Overall I think the girls did well," Dexter coach Jill King commented. "We need to improve in several areas but we are young. So each meet I hope we learn and keep improving.

"I had several singing in Poplar Bluff and then driving an hour and a half to come to the meet so that was a little stressful just hoping they could squeeze it all in."

The relay format is different than the traditional track meet where the competition is more individual. In the relay format, schools score as a team in an event with combined performances determining where a team places.

The Lady Bearcats won the sprint division with a first in the hurdle relay and 4x100 relay and a second in the 4x200 relay.

Chandler Crowley, Kelsi Wood and Courtney Potts combined for a first in the hurdle competition, while Taylor Martin, Brooke Baker, Samantha Midgett and Lindsey Hindman took first in the 4x100 relay. The team of Martin, Baker, Midgett and Christina Harris finished second in the 4x200.

In the field division the Dexter girls finished third. Martin, Harris and Potts combined to give Dexter a first place finish in the high jump.

The Lady 'Cats took second in the long jump (Hindman, Potts and Mackiniee Roger) and second in the triple jump (Harris, Miranda Roger and Taylor Winstead). The discus team of Mollie Whitehead,, Shayna Bess and Sarah Langley finished third.

The distance division saw the Lady 'Cats finish third with third place finishes in the 4x800 (Shelby Gathings, Wood, Alexis Smith and Morgan Cliff) and 4x400 relays (Whitehead, Harris, Cliff and Crowley).

On the boys side, King said the team was missing several athletes due to choir and band commitments.

The sprint medley saw the team of Jake Hindman, Damon Allstrun, James Conner and Dalton Rickie finished fourth. The discus guys (Zach Lacy, Trevor Waldner and Andrew Collier) also finished fourth as did the shot put team of Lacy, Collier and Taylor Cecil.

The throwers relay saw the boys (Waldner, Lacy, Cecil and Collier) earned a medal with a third place finish.

The 4x400 relay team of Rickie, Hindman, Dustin Bates and Ty Harmon finished fourth.

"Overall I think the guys worked hard and those that were there at the meet did a great job," King noted. "A lot of them did new events and got a lot of experience."

Dexter's track team will next be in action Wednesday at the Jackson Quad Meet. "Hopefully we will have everyone and be ready to compete."
