The Bernie Board of Education added retired teacher, Helen York, to their Hall of Fame during their annual Honors Banquet held recently at the school. Since 1996, the board has taken nominations annually for the honor as they seek to recognize an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in the local community. A committee reviews the nominations and one individual is chosen to be recognized...

Along with the hiring of Dexter native, Gavin Miller, to assume the role of assistant principal at T.S. Hill Middle School with the start of the 2015-16 school year (see May 6 edition of The Daily Statesman), the Dexter Board of Education accepted two letters of resignation and two staff transfers during a special meeting of the board on May 4. ...

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Bloomfield High School seniors will graduate on Sunday, May 17, at 4 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Representing the senior class of 2015 as valedictorian will be Rebecca Wood, daughter of Cindy and David Alberson. Wood graduates with an accumulated GPA of 3.97. Her activities include FFA, for which she served as chapter vice president and Area 15 Parliamentarian, and she is president and drum major for the Marching Wildcats...

Three Poplar Bluff individuals are in custody at the Stoddard County Jail, facing felony drug charges as a result of a Tuesday night arrest. According to Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner, at approximately 10:21 p.m. on May 5, Stoddard County deputies observed a vehicle parked in the parking lot of a construction business west of Dexter. Hefner said that prior burglaries in that area prompted the deputies to stop and approach the vehicle...

Residents gathered on the lawn at the City Hall Thursday to observe National Day of Prayer. Prayers for the nation, elected officials, schools and school officials, those who serve and protect and churches and families were offered by Jerry Corlew with the Southwest Church of the Nazarene, Pastor David Dohogne with Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Justin Sponaugle with the Faith Lutheran Church and Jim Berry and Pastor Ken Biggs, both with the First General Baptist Church. ...

First grade Girl Scouts from Bloomfield met at the city park on Tuesday to pack up Girl Scout cookies and other treats to be mailed to a local Marine, Cris Bayless, who will soon be stationed in Korea. Barry L. Baldwin, 62, of Wappapello, died May 5, 2015, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Arrangements are being handled by the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.
