ST. LOUIS -- An Illinois man was in custody Wednesday on charges he murdered a Southeast Missouri State University student during a failed robbery attempt last month in downtown St. Louis. A Dexter man remains hospitalized in Cape Girardeau after being struck by a vehicle while on the parking lot of Dexter's Walmart Super Center Wednesday morning. According to Cpl. POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The boyfriend of an Arkansas woman pleaded guilty recently to a manslaughter charge in connection with her strangulation death at a downtown Poplar Bluff apartment building. Dexter firefighters were kept busy Wednesday. After responding to a mobile home fire in the morning, they were summoned to 305 S. Sassafras St. around 3:15 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from the roof of the home. No one was in the residence at the time of the fire. Fire Chief Don Seymore reported that the fire was electrical and started in the attic of the house. The home sustained significant smoke damage and fire damage to one of the bedroom ceilings...

Murlene Patterson of Bell City, daughter of the late Clarence and Muriel Kirby Wingfield, was born in St. Louis on Dec. 13, 1936, and died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau on February 5, 2015, at the age of 78. She had lived in the Bell City area most of her life where she had worked as a cook at Head Start and was a member of the Bell City General Baptist Church...

Harry William (Bill) Litzler, son of the late Leonard Litzler and Clara Parkinson Litzler, was born on June 30, 1942, in Dexter and died on Feb. 4, 2015, at Venice Hospice House in Venice, Fla., at the age of 72. Mr. Litzler was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in the Vietnam War. He had worked as an equipment operator for the United States Navy CB's and was presently residing in Venice, Fla...
