It was at times an emotional tribute Sunday, but one also laced with humor, as city dignitaries, friends and family came together in Dexter to honor Fire Chief Al Banken upon his retirement from the local department after a stellar 48-year career. Red Cloud Eagle, son of the late Chief Ed White and Mary Josephine Pashegoba Eagle, was born on Dec. 31, 1940, in Gideon, Mo., and died at the Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Jan. 15, 2012, at the age of 71. Jimmy Hester, son of Beryl Irene Burroughs Hester and the late James V. Hester, was born in Bury St. Edmunds, England, on Feb. 28, 1957, and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter, Mo., on Jan. 7, 2012, at the age of 54. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Dexter. He worked at Purolator in Dexter for many years until his retirement. Jimmy served in the US Air Force. Delmer R. Barks, son of the late David Ransom and Minnie Ann Hardesty Barks, was born in Lowndes, Mo., on Aug. 24, 1929, and died at Missouri Southern Healthcare on Jan.14, 2012, at the age of 82. He was raised in Wayne County, Mo., and had called Dexter his home since 1962. ...

Marvin W. Ross, son of the late Marvin O. and Lilllian Russell Ross, was born May 12, 1938, in Wilson, Ark., and died at his home in Malden, Mo., on Jan. 13, 2012, at the age of 73. Marvin was the owner/operator of Marvin's Headquarters in Dexter and Double Platinum with Team National. He was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Klutts on Jan.16, 1981 in Gray Ridge, Mo.
