BLOOMFIELD — During a conference call Monday, Stoddard County Commissioners received notice Charter Communications will be competing for a BEAD grant to assist the underserved broadband needs of Puxico and Mingo area residents.
The Missouri Office of Broadband Development issued a map representing unserved and underserved areas within the state.
It was learned Puxico and Mingo areas have been targeted as solicited sub grantee project areas for Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) money.
Area director of Charter Communications Jennifer Hoskins said, “We are completing the process of applying for BEAD funding on projects in your county identified by the state.”
Presiding Commissioner Greg Mathis asked, “When is the deadline?”
Hoskins replied “It is due on Feb. 20, 2025.
According to the Missouri Department of Economic Development, pre-qualified BEAD applicants were determined Feb. 5.
Round 1, BEAD scoring for sub grantee selection opened Dec. 5. It will close Feb. 20. The Best and Final Offer period of Round 1 will run from Feb. 21 through April 21. Round 1, BEAD sub grantee determinations will be made April 22.
The Missouri Broadband Map (as of Dec. 31) classifies locations as served, underserved and unserved.
BEAD eligible is in unserved and underserved locations where no provider is receiving funding to extend service and no provider reported that they would bring service. Non-BEAD eligible areas are served, funded to get service, or reported they will bring service.

Hoskins asked the commission for contact information and the opportunity to communicate updates on this matter.
Hoskins said, “We offer a full range of internet, television, and mobile services in 21 states. The price is the same in every state and no contracts. The Internet may be provided to low income families and senior citizens for $15 a month.”
