Dexter Fire Department completed a two-day emergency vehicle driver training course offered Feb. 7-8 through the University of Missouri Extension program.
The course objective is to reduce the risk of accidents involving emergency responders and citizens by making new and experienced fire department vehicle drivers develop safe and competent driving skills.
“Some have years of experience and some have never driven a fire truck before,” said Capt. Gary Kinder.
It was learned four of the 22 firefighters in attendance were recently hired in January.
“Everyone received a certificate from the University of Missouri Extension and 16 hours of yearly training credits,” said Chief Don Seymore.
The program contained four hours of legal, eight hours of technical and four hours of skills. The comprehensive course included classroom instruction, competency course and testing.
The following DFD vehicles were utilized during competency course training: Ladder 19; 3500 Gallon Tanker; Pumper 2; Pumper 3; and Brush Truck 1.
The intent of the Emergency Vehicle Driver Training course is to teach each responder to use the learned skills and make them aware of the tragedy, financial loss and legal responsibilities that come with operating emergency vehicles, according to organizers.
The course was funded by Missouri’s Department of Transportation-Highway Safety & Traffic Division.
