Each year, the Christmas season officialy kicks off in Dexter with a community gathering near the downtown area to listen to the biblical reading from the Second Chapter of Luke.

The concept was begun by Greg Mathis in 2009 and follows a longtime family tradition.

"Too often we tend to get caught up in the rush of the holiday season and the gift giving and forget to pause to remember what the true spirit of Christmas is all about," said Mathis. "There is not a lot of fanfare with this event. It is simply a reading by a person in the local community who tells aloud the true story of the first Christmas."

The annual reading is held across from the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home on the west end of Stoddard Street. The reading takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday night, Nov. 28.and will include Christmas carols sung by members of the Crowley Ridge Mennonite Church Choir.

The public is invited to attend this annual seasonal event.
