DEXTER, Mo. - The Dexter Bearcats varsity girls basketball team concluded its two-day home shootout with a perfect 8-0 record Friday evening.
"I thought we played well these past two days, especially here in the tournament," Dexter coach Chad Allen said after the completion of play Friday. "I thought we did a real good job of pressuring, creating turnovers and getting the ball up and down against the teams we played. That's how we want to play and I thought the girls did a great job executing."
Dexter won preliminary games Thursday against Dresden, Tenn.; Peabody, Tenn.; Benton, Ill.; and Alton, Mo.
Dexter beat Ste. Genevieve in a preliminary game Friday morning before competing in bracket play Friday afternoon.
Top-seeded Dexter beat No. 8 seeded Kennett 42-22 in its quarterfinal, fifth-seeded Notre Dame 57-35 in its semifinal and second-seeded Benton 45-25 in the championship.
"We played a really good Dresden, Tenn., team Thursday that had a lot of success last year and had several players back," Allen said. "That was a tough game for us. I believe they played us to single digits. They had some really quick guards and good size inside. I thought we did a good job of playing them Thursday and it really helped us to play a team like that going into the tournament today."
The Dexter girls basketball program is slated to compete in its final Rib City Shootout of the summer July 17 and 18 at Dexter.
"Mainly, we want to get better defensively," Allen said of his program's main objective over the summer. "Last year we talked about getting better defensively at the end of the year. We showed flashes of that this weekend with our full-court pressure."
