With election filing now closed for the Aug. 5, 2014 primary election, local and state elections are now beginning to take shape.

In some cases, those elections are all but over due to no competition filing for several seats.

The race for 151st District State Representative may be the most hotly contested of them all.

On the Republican side, candidates include Amanda Jordan Brooks, Tila Rowland Hubrecht and Brandon Cooper. Hubrecht will also be the Republican Party candidate in the special election to fill this same seat for the remainder of the same year.

On the Democratic side, Ryan Wm. Holder will run unopposed.

Holder won the primary election in Aug. 2012, but lost in his bid against Republican challenger Dennis Fowler in Nov. 2012.

In the 8th U.S. Congressional District there will be no primary competition. In November, however, Democrat Barbara Stocker and Republican incumbent Jason Smith will face Constitution Party challenger Doug Enyart and Libertarian Rick Vandeven.

Only one county level office will be contested in the primary election. The first will be for the office of Associate Circuit Judge Div. 3. Incumbent Republican Steve Mitchell will face off against challenger Bradley D. Jarrell.

Two county offices will be contested in the Nov. 4 general election.

The first will be the office of Associate Circuit Judge for Div. 2. Incumbent Joe Z. Satterfield, a Democratic candidate, will go up against Republican Justin Kelley.

The presiding commissioner seat will also be decided in November when incumbent Democrat Greg Mathis is challenged by Republican Cecil Weeks.

Several other races, however, have been all but decided by the filing date.

Running uncontested on the ballot will be Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver, Republican; Recorder of Deeds Kay Asbell, Democrat, and County Clerk Joe Watson, Republican.

The county will see one newcomer to the political scene.

Paula Yancey, Republican, will be running uncontested for the seat of circuit clerk, to be vacated following the retirement of longtime clerk Sherry Disney. Yancey is currently the branch manager at US Bank in Bloomfield.
